For most buyers in 2026, a Ryzen 7 laptop is the better value. Newer Ryzen 7 chips (7840HS, 8845HS, Ryzen 7 250/260 and Ryzen AI 7) have 8 full cores, much stronger built-in graphics and usually better battery life, and the laptops often cost less. Choose a Core i7 HX chip (i7-14650HX or i7-14700HX) only if you edit long 4K videos, render 3D or stream while gaming and need the most cores.

What "Ryzen 7" and "Core i7" Mean in 2026

Both names are just a tier, like “top variant” on a car. Inside each tier you will find chips from 2021 to 2026, and the gap between old and new is bigger than the gap between AMD and Intel. If you are not sure which chip your current laptop has, see how to check the processor in your laptop.

AMD names: Ryzen 7, Ryzen 7 200 and Ryzen AI 7

Four-digit names such as Ryzen 7 7730U or Ryzen 7 8845HS are the older style. In 2025 AMD renamed some of these chips: Ryzen 7 170 uses the same design as the 7735HS, and Ryzen 7 250 and 260 use the same 8-core Zen 4 design as the 8845HS. The newest chips are called Ryzen AI 7 (for example Ryzen AI 7 350 and 450) and use Zen 5 cores with an AI engine (NPU).

Intel names: Core i7, Core 7 and Core Ultra 7

Intel used the “i7” name until its 14th Gen laptop chips. Newer chips are called Core 7 (for example Core 7 150U, based on an older design) or Core Ultra 7 (Core Ultra 7 255H, and the 2026 Series 3 chips such as Core Ultra 7 355 and Core Ultra X7 358H). On Amazon India most “i7” laptops still use 12th, 13th or 14th Gen chips.

The letters at the end matter most

U chips are low power for thin laptops. H and HS chips are for performance and gaming laptops. HX chips are the most powerful and the most power hungry. A Ryzen 7 U chip and an i7 HX chip are not in the same class, so compare chips with the same letter.

Watch out: the Ryzen 7 7445HS and Ryzen 7 155 are sold as Ryzen 7 but have only 6 cores and 12 threads, like a Ryzen 5. Several popular gaming laptops use them. They are fine for gaming with an RTX card, but they are not full 8-core Ryzen 7 chips, so do not pay extra for the “Ryzen 7” label.

The same chip can score 10 to 20% higher or lower depending on how much power and cooling the laptop gives it.

What the numbers say:

The older Ryzen 7 7735HS is slower than the i7-13620H in both tests. It is still fine for study, office work and gaming with an RTX card.
A Zen 4 Ryzen 7 260 / 8845HS is about 25% faster than the i7-13620H in multi-core work such as video export, with a small loss in single-core speed.
The i7-14650HX is the fastest here, but it is allowed to draw up to 157W in turbo, so it needs a thick gaming laptop and a big charger.

Ryzen 7 vs i7 for Gaming

For games, the graphics card (GPU) and its power limit (TGP) decide most of your frame rate. A Ryzen 7 7735HS with an RTX 4050 at full power will play games better than an i7-14650HX with a weaker RTX 3050. So choose the GPU first, then the processor.

Any 8-core Ryzen 7 or any i7 H or HX chip from the last three years is enough for games like Valorant, BGMI on emulator, GTA V, Forza Horizon 5 and Cyberpunk 2077 with an RTX 4050, RTX 5050 or RTX 5060. The extra cores of an i7 HX help most when you stream to YouTube or record gameplay at the same time.

If you play without a graphics card, Ryzen 7 wins easily. Its Radeon 780M and 860M built-in graphics can run lighter games at 1080p low settings, while the Intel UHD graphics in most i7 H and HX chips is meant only for display and video.

Battery Life, Heat and Fan Noise

Thin laptops: Ryzen 7 U and HS chips usually last longer on battery than Core i7 U and H laptops with the same battery size, because they use less power at light loads.
Gaming laptops: battery life is short on both (often 3 to 5 hours of light use), because the RTX graphics card and the high-refresh screen also use power. i7 HX laptops are usually at the low end.
Heat and noise: HX chips push more power, so fans spin faster under load. A laptop with a good cooling design matters more than the brand of the chip.
Charger: i7 HX gaming laptops come with large 170W to 230W chargers. Many Ryzen 7 thin laptops charge over USB-C with a 65W adapter.

Upgrades, RAM and Future-Proofing

You cannot upgrade a laptop processor. It is soldered to the motherboard, so choose the right chip when you buy.

RAM is a different story. Gaming laptops with Ryzen 7 or Core i7 usually have DDR5 slots you can upgrade to 32GB later. Many thin laptops, especially with Ryzen 7 U, Ryzen AI 7 and Core Ultra 7 V-series chips, use soldered LPDDR5 or LPDDR5X memory that cannot be changed. If you plan to keep the laptop for 4 to 5 years, buy 16GB as a minimum.

Three things stand out. Ryzen 7 thin laptops start about Rs 10,000 lower than i7 ones. The cheapest gaming deal here is an i7 (the Acer ALG with RTX 3050), so do not assume AMD is always cheaper. And at Rs 1.6 lakh, the Ryzen 7 250 LOQ gets a faster RTX 5060 for less money than the i7-14700HX LOQ with an RTX 5050, which is a better deal for gaming.

What About 2027? Should You Wait?

Both companies launched new laptop chips at CES in January 2026: Intel’s Core Ultra Series 3 (codename Panther Lake, up to 16 cores and much stronger Arc B390 graphics) and AMD’s Ryzen AI 400 series (for example Ryzen AI 7 450). Laptops with these chips are reaching India slowly, and mostly in premium models above Rs 1 lakh.

For 2027, leaked roadmaps point to Intel’s next chips (Nova Lake, expected as Core Ultra 400) and AMD laptop chips based on Zen 6. Neither company has confirmed dates or prices for India yet.

Our advice: do not wait. Most laptops under Rs 1.5 lakh in India will keep using the chips in this guide through 2027, and a Ryzen 7 8845HS-class or Core i7-13620H laptop bought today will handle study, work and gaming for 4 to 5 years.
